Artist's Comments

This is a page from the book of Canadian folk songs I'd like to get published. This page features the first verse of The Huron Carol which was originally written in French by Saint Jean de Brebeuf when he came to live among the Wendat people. I decided to upload the illustrations for this song for the Christmas season.

The Huron Carol (verse 1):

T'was in the moon of wintertime when all the birds had fled
The mighty Gitchee Manitou sent angel choirs instead
Before their light the stars grew dim
And wandering hunters heard the hymn...

"Iesus ahotonnia, ahotonnia
In excielsis gloria!"

Media: Watercolour and coloured pencils

I've never heard of it, but it sounds pretty. Is Huron for the lake? This looks really pretty too. I love the cool color scheme and how the person kind of blends into the sky like that.

Very beautiful. =)

I have that song in an album named "Irish Christmas" and the translation for the chorus is:

"Jesus your king is born,
Jesus is born, In excielsis gloria!"

This is amazing! So unusual! I wonder if Brebeuf got it a bit wrong though...Gitchi Manitou is a conception of the Algonquin peoples. I think the Huron/Wyandotte used a different term...but I wouldn't know what it is. Ah well, they intermingled a lot.

"Huron" is one of the alternate names of the Wendat/Wyandotte tribe of Indians. Lake Huron was named after them. :)
