Yay, first art of 2010! Not exactly happy art for the new year, I know... but I was feeling rather expressive today and really wanted to do a pastel portrait - I miss life drawing classes. ;_;
Anyways, this image is based off of a photo of myself in one of my kimono. I really liked the shadows and pose in the photo, so I drew it. I'm kind of happy that the portrait doesn't really look like me anymore, because the image feels too sad to be me.
Well, I wanted to give the feeling of warm candle light so I actually did the drawing on red paper.

It reminds me of this one storybook I have called the fox maiden. Particularly at one part where the maiden must return to the forest and take on her true shape of a fox so that she can see her family again. At that part, she is very conflicted because she is well fed and cared for amongst humans and she has found love with one of the men working at the same house as she.
