Artist's Comments

Well... I started drawing this piece during life drawing class a few weeks ago because our model was hindered by a snow storm. I didn't want to draw the "still life" set up my teacher had made so I started searching through my bag for some sort of reference. I found some of the pictures I took of my kimonos so I started drawing them. I didn't want the drawing to look like the photos so I altered things to the point that it doesn't even look like the model anymore.

Anyways, this thing sat in my bag, unifinished for a few weeks. Then the :iconeternal-geisha: club announced a contest to design a new cover for the book "Memoirs of a Geisha" by Arthur Golden. Suddenly it dawned on me that I could make this drawing work for that contest. Soooooooooo... I spent a few good hours adding the background and finishing it all off. And here it is! Hope you like it!

The Japanese patterns in the background were chosen to co-respond with the character Sayuri. The pine tree is a symbol of endurance, the cherry bloosoms denote beauty and the stream of water represents the fact that Sayuri is said to have "too much water in her personality."

Media: A big giant mish-mash - pencil crayon, india ink, acrylic ink, white out, chalk pastel, wax crayon, watercolour and gouache. The typography was added in photoshop. The background was also darkened to accomodate the type.

The book "Memoirs of a Giesha" is the property of Arthur Golden all rights to him.

Thank you once again to my model for modeling in the first place. *hugs you*

Prints of the piece are up for sale in my Etsy shop: [link]

Absolutely beautiful. I really think it fits well with the book.

However, I think it might turn male readers away as it is very flowery and pastel colored. I loved the book but I'm not sure I would have picked it up with this cover, being that I am very guy-like and would probably have thought it was a cheasy romance novel, when it isn't entirely.

Never the less, great artwork and good luck on the contest!

Thanx!

Thank you very much for the honest critique! I find its very rare to get them - and considering this is likely the kind of work I'll be doing for a living after I graduate, your contructed criticism is very much appreciated. When I was working on this, I didn't even think it might put off male readers - which of course is a crucial thing to consider. I'm happy you told me!

Very nice, I drew a big one a while ago based on the movie promo pic, but I've yet to colour it...

Nice!
I like this better than the actual cover!
The traditional patterns and the intresting lineart are just fantastic!

November 12th, 2007 Laura, you were a great person, and will be missed by all

Why is it, that if a man kills another man in battle it's heroic; yet if he kills a man in the heat of passion, it's murder

XD Ha ha ha. Someone's been learning in design class. Nice text. TEeheeheheheh.

You're very welcome. I always appreciate constructive criticism so I try to offer it as well.

Its funny though... this morning I'm not sure my critique is actually valid. ;P Probably the guys that would get turned off by he cover aretthe ones who wouldn't read through it anyhow... Tough call.

Still like the art.;)
